“Technology for a Better World.”
That’s Semtech Corporation’s M.O., and they’ve been supporting these words with innovation-backed actions since 1960. As a provider of high-performance semiconductors, IoT systems and cloud connectivity services (i.e. ranging from wireless RF and broadcast video to professional AV, routers, modules, smart sensing products, etc.), Semtech has indeed grown into a multinational technology innovator, leveraging its talented teams to develop high-value solutions that, quote, “fuel a safer, more productive, more sustainable, and socially focused planet.”
Last year, we featured Semtech in a variety of IoT Evolution World coverage. Click each of the following links to read further; namely, about Semtech’s strategic partnership with GetWireless, the respective debuts of its XCVR Development Board and Reference Design and its LoRaWAN Hub Reference Design and Evaluation Kit, and the appointment of Dr. Hong Q. Hou as Semtech President and CEO.
But again, that’s a slice of what the company got up to 2024.
Here’s a new Semtech update that we caught wind of earlier this week:
Semtech announced that iWOW Technology — “iWOW” being an acronym for “Inspiring World of Wireless” — has been leveraging Semtech’s LoRa technology for its battery-powered wireless emergency alert system that’s currently deployed in 10,000 public housing flats for senior citizens in Singapore since 2019.
This is good news. iWOW’s end-to-end IoT solutions already benefit a number of smart metering and tracking applications for smart city environments; while relying on Semtech, iWOW has reportedly secured emergency medical assistance for 800+ seniors. This has all been part of Singapore’s Age Well SG program (led by its Ministry of Health) to create better living conditions for the country’s elderly, and Semtech-powered system is expected to be extended to serve an additional 27,000 seniors housed in 170 public rental housing blocks in the future.
And in the vein of smartly developed care, this is precisely that — smart. Simple wall-mounted, battery-powered red buttons have been placed in various accessible locations in each senior’s flat, and pressing the button immediately routes an emergency call to a 24-hour response center, while the mobile app notifies the senior’s next of kin.
“IoT and smart home technologies can play a vital role in helping people age in place,” explained Shahar Feldman, Senior Director of Product Marketing at Semtech. “iWOW’s successful deployment over the past five years proves the effectiveness of this model to empower independent living for seniors and deliver round-the-clock emergency monitoring.”
JY Chen, Senior Vice President at iWOW Technology, also commented.
“Based on government program requirements, these emergency devices had to be battery-powered, require minimal maintenance and consume little energy, and Semtech provided,” Chen added. “Using LoRa and LoRaWAN was the clear choice, especially with its capacity to support other IoT applications in the future.”
