IoT Evolution Expo 2020 Features AI and Machine Learning Experts

By Ken Briodagh

IoT Evolution Expo 2020 is coming up fast, and we interviewed several of our speakers to get a bit of a preview of what to expect from their sessions.

Here, we spoke again to one of our featured panelists, Tom Snyder, executive director, RiOT (Booth #1115), who will be taking the stage on Thursday Feb 13th as part of a panel on How ML Makes IIoT Smart at IoT Evolution Expo 2020, which is taking place February 11 to 14 in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.

Here is a little preview of his thoughts:

IoT Evolution: What are some key ideas you plan to cover in your session?

Tom Snyder: AI and ML are some of the biggest buzz words in tech and very few people really understand them.  Marketing always leads reality.  Session will attempt to filter the signal from the noise on these technologies, their maturity and usefulness.

IoTE: What insights do you hope attendees will take home?

TS: There are many options and few standards (yet).  Partnership is key.  Identify the right partners and you will be successful as new technologies and protocols sort themselves out.  Always keep the customer front of mind so you will steer the technology to the market and not let technology steer you wrong.

IoTE: Can you identify a few important trends influencing your sector of the IoT which will shape the path of the industry? Why these?

TS: The biggest trend is that the consumption-based pricing models for connectivity and cloud of the Internet Era are not compatible with IoT.  Business cannot bear a cost per gigabyte or cost per compute cycle style pricing model.  Cost per outcome is where we see the industry moving.

IoTE: What are the biggest challenges facing the IoT right now? What are some strategies you recommend to overcome those challenges?

TS: Security and Privacy are paramount.  While often lumped together, these are not the same thing, nor are they solved the same way.  Privacy and Security not features, but hygiene requirements.  Most companies are still failing on both fronts.  To solve them, privacy must be seen as a business function.  Security is technical.
