Let There Be Smart Lighting at IoT Evolution Expo 2020

By Ken Briodagh

IoT Evolution Expo 2020 is coming up fast, and we interviewed several of our speakers to get a bit of a preview of what to expect from their sessions.

Here, we spoke to one our featured Smart City panelists, Don DeLoach, CEO, Rocket Wagon Venture Studios, who will be taking the stage At IoT Evolution Expo 2020, which is taking place February 11 to 14 in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, in the Smart City track: Let There Be Smart Lighting: How Municipalities Can and Should Leverage Lighting for Big Results. Later in the week, he’ll also be speaking on SD-IoT and Public-Private partnerships in the Smart City.

Here is a little preview of his thoughts:

IoT Evolution: What are some key ideas you plan to cover in your session?

Don DeLoach:

  • The holistic nature of IoT
  • The role of lighting infrastructure in the context of the city
  • Data ownership and governance
  • Data privacy
  • Digital Twins
  • Evolving the technology over time
  • How this relates to heterogenous device interaction over time

IoTE: What insights do you hope attendees will take home?

DDL: Think holistically, and consider the data ownership, governance, and overall lifecycle

IoTE: Can you identify a few important trends influencing your sector of the IoT which will shape the path of the industry?

DDL:

  • The movement (albeit slowly) toward and beyond product systems and into System of Systems – with the implications of heterogenous device interaction
  • Increasing imperative regarding security
  • Use of Digital Twins
  • Increasing role of the edge and the far-reaching implication with respect to data

IoTE: What are the biggest challenges facing the IoT right now? What are some strategies you recommend overcoming those challenges?

DDL: Challenges:

Understanding the ecosystem of foundational elements (chipsets, comms choices, security, privacy, governance, data ownership, the role of the edge, the role of digital twins, the DevOps consideration from an IoT ecosystem perspective) and especially the inter-relationships between these elements and the implications on the curation of the datasets and what that means for operational, investigative and predictive analytics and especially what is means for Machine Learning and AI.

Strategies:

Executive level workshops (distilling this into a short, ½ workshops to provide executives in organizations the 20% comprehension suitable for making better decisions for 80% of their business.

Industry solutions progression to abstract the complexity from addressing foundational elements so the right architecture is made easier (especially at the edge… we are seeing examples of this with certain edge platforms already).

IoTE: Which vertical markets have the most to gain from IoT implementation? Which are leading and which are still behind the adoption curve?

DDL: Gain the most: Healthcare, Mobility, Industrial, Ag, Environmental

Behind the curve (and by definition, these “behind the curve” have much to gain by virtue of the fact that they both have terrible margins and face existential threats where IoT and broader digital transformation can play a key role in driving far greater efficiencies): Construction, Shipping

IOTE: What sessions are you most looking forward to attending at the Expo? Why?

DDL: Digital Twins – Too much hype in the market; want to hear how various people are articulating their vision and implementations of DT

Various Edge related sessions – The edge is absolutely a key point in the architecture, and the need for leveraging the edge is significant. I am interested to hear how a variety of organizations are using the edge to truly increase the overall leverage they get from their IoT implementations, especially with respect to data curation, governance, and propagation to a variety of constituents, as well as enhancement of privacy and security.

The Platform Discussion – so much noise – interesting to hear what gets discussed

The Mobility Discussion on Wednesday – I have specific initiatives underway here, and am involved with AVs, and am interested to hear what they have to say

The 5G discussion on Thursday – similar to above – active efforts underway

Register now for the IoT Evolution Expo and Get 20% off your full conference with code IoTTime and be there for all the information you need to drive your IoT strategy in 2020.
