Semtech and Smart Parks Work to Protect Wildlife

By Ken Briodagh

IoT has a lot to help with when it comes to environmental protection and sustainability. Whether helping to monitor the whereabouts of endangered species or providing protection for both humans and animals that live in close proximity, technology can be used to aid in wildlife conservation efforts.

According to a recent announcement, Smart Parks and Semtech have teamed up to deploy LoRa devices and LoRaWAN protocol via 55 gateways with the goal of protecting wildlife, improving conservation and better management of parks across more than 16 million miles in countries like Rwanda, Kenya, Tanzania, India, Malawi and the Netherlands.

Semtech reportedly has been working to minimize conflict between people and elephants in North Bank Landscape, Assam, India. The company has also helped minimize the poaching of black rhinos by accurately monitoring the whereabouts of the endangered animals via sensors implanted directly into their horns in Mkomazi National Park, Tanzania. Since deploying the tech in Mkomazi, poaching has been reduced to zero, and one of the rhino sensors even provided a location update every seven minutes for 365 days in a row.
